NUHAKA NORTH
(from our correspondent.) July 20. Tile weather here for some time past lias been exceptionally wet, and bushfelling and all kinds of farm work is much retarded thereby. On Sunday morning last, heavy, rain set in from the nortii-east, and the downpour continued till- Monday night. T io rivers and creeks were all moreor less in a Hooded state, the depth of water in Stewart’s crossing was 7 feet The roads are now blocked for wheel traffic, and some parts of the mair road are in a deplorable state anl absolutely dangerous to horses arrl riders.
Considering the severe weather this winter the stock so far appears to be doing fairly well; several settlers had good crops of turnips, which were of great benefit to their hoggets. Two sawmills have recently been erected In the Mangaone Valley, The enterprising proprietors are Messrs T. Taylor, Mclntyre and C'o., and oloan Brothers. The mills have commenced operations, and will no doubt soon be in full swing, and the difficulty of procuring sawn timber will bo no longer felt by the settlers of Nuhaka and surrounding districts. Mr Hodge also has a sawmilling plant erected near the Nuhaka river, and is busy converting the forest trees of that locality into building timber,
