ABSENCE OF NATIVE MEMBERS.
(Special to Times.) WELLINGTON, August 13. When the discussion on the Maori band Settlement Amendment Bill was entered this afternoon it was a noticeable fact that the seats of all the -Native members were empty. Mr. i\gata is attending sittings of the .Native Land Commission, at Napier, ;V r ' Kaihau, so far, lias not favored llie House with his presence this session and Messrs. Ileke and Paraia were not in tlieir places. Mr. A 1. V- Fraser, Chairman of the Nati.e AH airs Committee is also a ttending the sittings of the Native Land Commission. After the discussion had been proceeding some time Mr. Parata (whoso constituents are not particularly interested in Native Land Legislation) took his seat, but he did ;.ot take any part in the discussion oeyond contributing an interjection or two. Mr. Massey m referring to the natter said that the principle of taking members away from the House was a bad one and should not be encouraged, whether it was for the purpose of a Royal Commission or tor any other purpose. The absence ol the JNative members was not unnaturally ‘remarked upon by more than one speaker.
