KAITERATAHI GRAVEL PIT.

Tlio Borougli Engineer (Mr. E. Harvey Gibbon) reported to the Council last evening: Kaitertahi Gravel Pit: 111 accordance with the Council’s instructions I visited Ivaiteratahi gravel pit, jand found that the river had been all over tho ground, covering it with a than laver of silt, rendering it impossible to judge of the available shingle' except from the depth of the material at the railway siding and at ' .the three prospecting pits opened presumably by the Railway Department.' From the actual measurements at the cutting the material to tho‘right of the line shows —Ist, three feet of •silt interlaid with bands of fine gravel; 2nd, seven feet of gravel. To the left of the line —Ist, two feet six of fine sand and mullock and five feet of gravel. Taking an average of 2ft 9in of stripping,. this amounts to 4435 cubic yards per acre, and the available gravel after this had been ’ removed 9680 cubic yards, per acre, as far as can, bo seen. The prospecting pit inside the fence gives praotioally tile same result, with a little additional silt to remove. The pit outside tho fence shows up a little better, there being 2ft Sin of gravel on ; the surface, then two feet of sand jand fine gravel overlaying the gravel. For every foot in deprth of gravel there would be 1013 cubic vards! per acre. Assuming that an average depth of gravel of Oft could he j obtained, this would give a total ! of 48,390 cubic yards of gravel, with 16,130 cubic yards of sand and silt, to be removed, averaging the last ait 2ft in thickness.” The Mayor said the Council couid go further into the subject' when the Government’s reply was received .re the five acres recjuired.
