CARRENO RECITAL.
The appearance ait His Majesty s Theatre next Tuesday of Madame Carreno, tlie great pianist, who-has been introduced to New Zealand by Herr Soherek, is an event which should excite the greatest possibleinterest amongst lovers of music. Madame Carreno has had a romantic career. She is a native of Caracas, Venezuela, and a grand-niece of Simon Bolivar, the liberator of America from the Spanish yoke. Her father, who was an accomplished musician, was at one time Minister of Finance. She received parental instruction in music at a very early age, and she showed such aptitude that she 'was enabled to make her debut as a pianist in New York at the ago of nine. Sho quite won the heart of Goltschalk, then at the zenith of his success, and ho at once accepted lier as a pupil. When sho went to Europe three years later she beoanie the-pu-pil 0 f George Matthias, student' under Chopin, and subsequently of .Rubinstein and Liszt, and she soon became famous iu Great Britain and America, as well as on tJio Gontnncut. From then Madame Carreno lias taken the position ,of one of the greatest pianistes of the period. 5 As au object lesson to students of the piano, the visit here of Madame Carreno should he of incalculable value. The programme which has been _ selected for the occasion is one which should give full opportunity for the display of the wonderful versatility and power possessed by Madame Carrono. The composers represented include Beethoven, Chopin; Rubinstein, and Liszt. As representing the first the great “Appassionata” Sonata will be given. Chopin will he illustrated amongst other numbers >}* Ins well-known “Polonaise’? in A flat and “Nocturne,” Op. 62. A “Romanza aiul “Barcarolle” by Rubinstein wall he given, and the “Rhapsodic HOll- - No. 6” of Liszt, Such a programme played, by an artist of worldwide reputation like Madame Garreno should bo listened to by a crowded house. The plan of reserved seats w.ill he opened at Mr. Miller's tomorrow morning at IQ.-
