INTENTIONS OF WHELCH. REMAINS AMATEUR FOR NEXT SEASON. Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, August 24. On Tuesday Geo. Wliololi, the amateur sculling champion of N.Z., received a cable firom.R. Arnst, who is aL present in Sydney, lasking if ho was wiling to row a match with him dn N.Z. for £IOO a side. Wiholch, in reply, .asked Arnst when lie wanted to cake the match on, and up to yesterday ho had received no reply to his question. In answer to inquiries as to Ids plans, Wlielch stated definitely yesterday that he would row for itlio Al aroa Boating Club this summer and make a bid tor tlio Edmonds Cup worth the holder of the sculling championship for three years. Ho intends to allow no professional matches to stand in the way of his attaining the; amateur cup. Should Arnst bo willing he will trow off with him after the event at .the championship regatta. Wlielch is anxious also to meet Webb, (and once ho has the Edmonds Cup will make arrangements for a meeting with the woa-ld’s champion.
