Tho final of tlio competition will be played on Saturday between Auckland and Wellington. PALMERSTON, August 28. Tlio Tiaranaki-Manawatu football match was played here to-dav, on a ground in good order. In the first 20 minutes of the game Mauawatu was almost constantly attacking, blit after that they were not “in the hunt,” Tan.inaki, “getting all over” them. Hunter and Cameron were particularly brilliant among tlio visiting backs. Tlie latter’s goal-kicking was also a prominent feature. The final scores were —Tararmki 27, Mauawatu 6. Mr. George Howe (Wellington) refereed. INVERCARGILL, August 28. The football match, Canterbury v. Southland to-day resulted in a win (unexpectedly severe) for tlio visitors by 14 to 3. Nevertheless tlio Canterbury play easily justified the extent of their majority. Tlio team was far cleverer than the local men, the forwards being markedly sujierior in the heavy work. In fielding, and notably in line-kicking, they showed well. Though the game was noticeably held up in the local territory the visitors did most of the forcing, and would lhave had an even bigger tally, had it not been for certain mistakes by individuals, which spoiled good openings. The score stood at 6-3 enrly in tho first spell, and Southland was trying hard till the whistle blew. Canterbury’s last try was just on no-side, they having had the upper hand all through the second spell. Of their four tries on© was converted, tlie scorers being Malbony, Shannon, and Deans (2). Staid scored Southland’S one try. The game was not a spectacular one, but satisfied the critics that the Canterbury men can look forward with confidence to meeting Wellington, Taranaki, and Auckland.
