Tho number of oarsmon from both dubs competing, and tho large gathering which witnessed the rogattn, augur well for the success of tho ensuing season. The City •Band took up a stand near the Rotunda, wliero the .hulk of the spectators were assembled, and discoursed selections during tho afternoon. After the nautical procession, Air. E. P. Joyce, President of the P.B. Rowing Club, mado a brief speech from his point of vantage on the launch “Sprite.” Ho apologised fur tho absence of the Alayor, owing to indisposition, and said .that tlio duty of declaring the season open devolved upon him. Proceeding, he said that this was a very pleasant duty to him, as lie had always held a high opinion of rowing as a splendid sport. Ho could not understand why .it did not

meet with .more generous support from citizens, and hoped to witness considerable improvement in this respect during the ensuing term. It was a manly and healthy form of athletics, and he predicted moro enthusiasm being infused into it now that New Zealand held a championship against .tlio world.
