FOOTBALL.

The football match between the Gisborne juniors and the Whatatutu team was played at Whatatutu yesterday afternoon. There was a large attendance, and great interest was taken in the game. The visitors, who were on the light side, even for juniors, wero a clever combination, and succeeded in beating the country team •by 9 points to 6. The home team kept the visitors strictly on tho defoii. ive in tho opening stages of the game, and should have scored on one or two occasions, over-eagerness being their chiof failing. P. Hickey scored two tries for the town team, and J. Roderick kicked a penalty goal. For Whatatutu T. Swain, and Broughton succeeded in crossing the coveted trench. j\lr Jas. McCredie controlled the game in an efficient manner, while Messrs W. Hay (Gisborne)' and 15. Taylor (Whatatutu) held tho line pennons. Tho visitors were entertained at a dinner at tho Whatatutu Hotol, where Reg. Caulton, the popular proprietor, and tho erstwhile Poverty Bay representative, had a sumptuous repast prepared for the bovs. who were hungry after their long journey in tho train, and they did full justice to the good things provided. The team arrived in town at 7 o’clock last evening, having ono ard all thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
