ANOTHER BLOW 7 AT BETTING
MELBOURNE, Oct. 22. The Commonwealth Gazette contains a notice prohibiting the delivery of correspondence through the post to Oxen bain and Wren. The news lias created some consternation among bookmakers. The order issued against the Tasmanian firm strikes the most serious blow at Tattersall’s sweeps experienced for some time.. Steps are also being taken to see whether another indirect method of obtaining tickets cannot be dealt with.
CRICKET
PROFESSIONALISM IN CRICKET.
SOME UNPLEASANT FACTS.
The following rather remarkable cable message was published in Australia recently:—“Wellington, N.Z., Monday.—At the annual meeting of tlio Otago Cricket Association, Mr. Campbell (vice-president) said they did not want any more English teams on conditions liko those on which they had the last one. When the council were asked to pay the washing bills and tips, that was going rather too far. He thought it was a great disgrace’ for any team supposed to consist of gentlemen to come out and say, ‘Wo are going to exploit New Zealand.’ They did not want any more of that kidney out here.” Washing bills and tips for servants, porters, etc., are usually included in tlio expenses paid by tlio Cricket Associations in Australia for travelling players engaged in representative cricket. The following are the terms, which have proved insufficiently alluring to some of tlio leading professionals in England for the visit to Australia this year, a perusal of which may be enlightening to some of our readers: . 1. £3OO for each professional s services. . 2. First-class fare to Australia and back, and 30s a week on board ship to cover charges for wines, tobacco, 3. Hotel expenses in Australia 40s per week to cover charges for wines, tobacco, cab fares, etc. 4. Railway fares and travelling expenses in Australia, including lunclicons and drinks, -etc.,, on sucli occasions. , . ~ 5. Washing hills and the “tipping of servants’ etc., both on the ship and oil shore. Th? great professional cricketer has been catered for in such a princely way by Australian promoters since 1894, that his services will soon be beyond reach.
