SUCCESSFUL DISPLAY AND ENTERTAIN AIENT.

Tlie ojiening ceremony in connection with the Dominion Fair in His Alajesty’s Theatre was performed yesterday afternoon by tho Mayoress, Airs. Townley. The Theatre presented a strikingly pretty aspect, and in the hands of Aliss F. AlcCormick the draping and decoration of the various stalls was a complete success. Tho stalls were loaded with a profusion of useful and ornamental articles, and a brisk business is reported by the different stallholders. Aliss Lang’s orchestra contributed several selections which considerably added to the pleasure of the afternoon. A song was contributed by Aliss Bouar Alillar. Tho entries for the competitions were few, but the quality of the exhibits was in each case excellent. For the best shirt blouse Airs. H.

Simeon was the successful competitor out of an entry of four. Aliss AlcConnell and Aliss F. Black were awarded the prizes for plum cake and sponge sandwich respectively. In the sweetmeats competition there were only two entries, and first honors were carried off by Airs. H. DeLautour, whose entry was really choice. Aliss G. Sweet’s exhibit was highly commended. Afternoon tea was dispensed at the back of the stage, which had been tastefully designed for that purpose. Alesdames Bright, Crawford, ’ aiid Clirisp were in charge of this department, and were ably assisted by Alisses Bright, D. Clirisp, Agnew Brown, and Craw-

ford. The following is the list of tho stalls and stallholders: —Plain Work, Alesdames Do Lautour, Goffe, and Haultain; Junior Guild, Alisses

Black, Alurray, and Coleman; Sweets, Alesdames Thomas and V. Barker, Alisses AVilson, Clare, Beeson, and Hingston (2) ; Ice Cream, Misses Sherratt' (2) and Rutledge; Produce, Alesdames Akroyd and Hingston, Misses Aliller and Akroyd; Fancy, Alisses Brookc-Taylor (2) and Carter.; Flowers, Airs. AVillock, Alisses Nolan, Gould, Ferguson, and DeLautour; Jumblo Stall, Alesdames Kissling, Seymour, AVilson, and Blair; Fish Pond, Misses B. Black and Hamilton ; Bran Pie, Alisses Goffe and Alattliews.

In the evening good business was done at all the stalls. The Club Orchestra played a number of agreeable selections. The cigarette-rolling competition was won by Airs. Elliott. At--9 o’clock the farce “The Area Belle” was staged. As “the area belle” Aliss Pyke met with a good reception, being applauded on each appearance. Aliss King, as the “missus” of the pieco acquitted Iherself admirably, her distinct enunciation being a particular feature. Great amusement was

created by Dr. Buckeridge, who impersonated Pitcher, the policeman, in excellent style: The character of a soldier and a were capably upheld by Alessrs Long and Hamlin respectively. The bazaar- will open again at 3 o’clock this afternoon, when orches-

tral and vocal items will be given. At 8 o’clock the waxworks, which were yesterday well patronised, will be on exhibition. A hat-trimming competition for men will eventuate at 8.30 o’clock, and at 9 o'clock “The Area

Belle” will, by request-,, be repeated. There is a great variety of articles in

the jumble stall, and there are many interesting exhibits in the stall devoted to boys’ carpentry. The refreshment stall is in capable hands, and will bo open both afternoon and evening.
