MEDICAL SCHOLARSHIPS
A STRANGE BEQUEST,

. AYELLINGTON', Jan. 23. Acting in accordance with the will of the late Mr. Daniel O’Sullivan. of 1 leasant Point, near Timaru, -a firm of Timaru solicitors has communicated with the University Senate, informing the Senate of a bequest for a medical scholarship in connection with the University, by his will dated September 17tli, 1906. Air. O’Sullivan bequeaths the residue of his estate, after the fuljfilnient of certain bequests, .to the University for the purpose of founding an “O’Sullivan” scholarship, or a scholarship for medical students' of the Roman Catholic faith. The present value of file estate is shown at £45,000, subject to the payment of legacies and charges. By the same will the deceased bequeathed £IOO to the Catholic clergy of his district for masses for the repose of' his soul. The solicitors wrote that though there might be some doubt as to the validity of the bequest, they wished to be advised of the consent of the Senate to the course they propose di to take. Ike scholarship was to be of an annual value of £IOO. Doubt was ex--pressed by members. of the Senate to-day whether the bequest could be accepted, seeing That it limited tlie students to a particular denomination, whereas the University was a purely secular body, though there could bo no objection.to the (Senate certifying to the trustee, who should be entitled to such scholarships, the Senate referred' the matter to the law committee.
