TOKOMARU v. THURSDAY ELEVEN.

T.ho visiting team of Tokomaru cricketers commenced the first- of their series of throe mutches at Victoria Domain yesterday, when they met a representative Thursday eleven. Play commenced at 10 a.m., when J. ’Gibson, the Gisborne captain, won the toss, iand decided to bat. The local batsmen scored at'a fairly brisk rate throughout the forenoon, ami at 1 o’clock, when the teams adjourned to the Record Reign Hotel for luncheon, the board showed 20-1-S-0. D. Miller did' the lion’s share of the run-getting, and contributed a bright and attractive scoro of 93 to the total. .lie exhibited sound defence, but was very severe on anything over-pitched or loose, do gave a chance when 5, to mid-oil’, but this was the only blemish in his capital exhibition. When 'apparently sure of tho century ho was finely taken bv G. Oates olf W. Oates. Austen 033), H. AVack (27), J. Lang (11), ami Emanuel (11) also halted well. Tho visitors had any number of bowlers, no less than nine men having a turn with the ball. They mado tho mistake of trying too much for tho wicket, and did not show any great amount- of variation in puce or length. AV. Oates (1 lor -15) came out with tho best bowling figures, though G. Oates (2 for fit) also bowled well, and had a serviceable wicketkeeper in J. Oates, who smartly stumped J. Lang and Emanuel. The Tokomaru men, on going to the wickets, made a disastrous opening, and the whole side collapsed for tho meagre total of 53 runs. H. Wack and Brown bowled unchanged, and both came out with battering figures. Following on, the visitors made a much better stand, and 1 succeeded in totalling 125. The ltev. AA\ Robinson, who captained the Kent County second eleven during the seasons of 1900, 1901, 1902, and 1903, is their star batsman, 'and ho gave a stylish exhibition of correct cricket in compiling his quota (2S) before being dismissed by a brilliant one-handed' catch in tile slips by Alii lor off H. AA’ack. AA 7 . Oates, tlvo Tokomaru captain, and G. Jollv did 6omo big hitting, and quite livened things up while at the wickets'. Tlio Gisborno team were very remiss in tlio field', and' Miller, Brown, and Burke dropped easy catches. The throwing-in from the field was also badly directed. H. AVack and Brown again bowled well. The Gisborno team thus won by an innings and 30 runs. Messrs. R. Thehvall and- Rico wero tho umpires. The following are tlio scores : THURSDAY REPRESENTATIA T ES. J. Lang, st- J.
