THE TRENT-HAM MEETING
SEVERE COMMENTS.
Press Association. WELLINGTON, Jan. 27. _ Tlio “Evening Post” in its editorial columns to-night, says: “Tlie Wellington Racing Club has now been in occupation ol 'Trentliam lor about three years, during which time some 2411 races have been held there, yet the public is asked to believe that so othicallv perfect 'is the conduct- of .racing there that nothing savoring ot corrupt practices has ever happened. It must bo so, for tlie stewards have never in the whole of that time held a single inquiry, or sought any explanation from owner, trainer, or jockey. Stay! That is not quite correct, for is it not upon the records that upon a certain solitary occasion one jockey, having reported another for unfair riding, the stewards actually did something, and suspended tlie of tender during their pleasure? If tlio stewards think that tlie public is satisfied with tlie exceedingly gentlemanly regulation, and control of racing, which exists at Trentliam, they live in a. tool’s paradise, as the support of the public is essential to the success of the club. Cases of glaring ■inconsistency have been witnessed at Trentliam, and last week was no exception. Owners and trainers, for their reputation’s sake, should lie given an opportunity to explain any marked 'improvement or retrogression in their horses. The public was murmuring last week, andwas obviously not satisfied. It would lie a thousand pities if anything occurred to impair the confidence reposed ill the stewards by the public, and we trust that they will without feir or favor do their best to retain it.” In the city a good deal is heard about “stiff” running, and a good deal more about the “Can’t, wins” and tlio “Won’t wins.”
