FORTNIGHTLY MEETING
The Borough Council met Inst evening. ; Present: His Worship tho Mayor (in tho chair), and Crs. AY. Miller, AV. Pet tie, A. Sawyer, Is. 11. Mann, and Dr. Williams. CORRESPONDEN OE. Tho Chief Inspector of the Labor Department acknowledged receipts of letters of 1 24th nit., notifying the result of tho poll taken under section 15 of the Factories Act Amendment Act, 1907. As this was the first notice received under the Act, some little delay, was taking placo in gazetting it on account of its having to bo drawn up in the Crown Lands office. Ho would send an extract from tho Gazette as soon as the notico was published. Mr P. McLaughlin askod the Council to reconsider its decision not to admit any liability in roloronco to his claim, as otherwise ho would bo roluctiV .cly compelled to seek redress elsewnei'Q. lie would bo willing to leave the! inn tver to arbitration.. aBo? a brief discussion it was ■ cfembiftw aiilicro to the previous decision. Messrs Chrisp and Coleman forwarded tho dedication transfer of a. road by iUr M. B. lUanaer, under section lit oi the Public Works Act, 19U6, and approving of the form of certificate as altered by the writers, under tho statute. There was no obligation on Mr Mandor’s part to form and metal the road. The Council must pay him compensation for tho part dedicated. The question was lolt in abeyance until the question of compensation comes up. The . Inspector of Noxious AVeeds drew attention to tho provisions oi' the Act of 1900, and gave a reminder that unless its provisions were complied with as regards weeds oil lands including roads, prosecutions would follow. It was stated that fennel was the weed referred to.—lt was decided to clear the roads. The Kapai Broom Company quoted the price of £OO for a- street sweeper. —Statements were made by Councillors that tho streets were in a very bad state on Sunday mornings.—lt was decided to draw tho Overseer’s attention to the matter.
Mr. H. J. Day, station master in charge of the Gisboruo section, wroto in reference to water connections, from a half to a million gallons per year were used.—Cr Miller remarked that this was a matter requiring careful consideration-. —It was decided to charge Is per thousand gallons for station and engine purposes, and £1 per quarter for houses. The Clerk of the Cook County Council advised that' Mr. H. G. AVilliams, of llauiti, had inadvertently obtained an auctioneer’s license for the current- year from the Borough Council, and the fee should have gone to tho County Council. Ho asked that the money be refunded to Mr. AVilliams .and that lie bo directed to apply to the County Council for the license.—lt was stated that the application was made by a local firm for Mr. AVilliams. — Cr. Miller expressed a doubt as to tbo legality of'returning the money. —lt was decided to reply that- the application was in order, and tho Council saw no reason to accede to the request.—Cr A Linn did not think they could act upon the request of another body. ... A number of residents asked that the upper portions of Childers Road be repaired.—Cr. Sawyer remarked that the road was all right before tlio races.—The matter was referred UU r xxrsu aa I*. ■The Overseer reported- 4Ji a fc tlio streets oft- the borough yoreun livery bad state, and he urged- l Aboil effort be made to obtain as much stone from Patutahi as jiossible, and he suggested that irrespective of the contracts already let, tbo Council offer 8s per yard for stone delivered in the borough. Regarding the supply of shingle, he recommended that arrangements bo made for the immediate supply of, say, 5,000 cubic yards, ail'd that the Railway Department be asked to immediately put in tlie siding to the Council’6 five acres at Kaitaratahi. This quantity alone would more than pay for tho siding. In the meantime, he suggested that- all the available shingle lie taken from both Ormond and Kaitaratahi stations. The footways wero very bad, and several urgently required tarring. Another gang should be put on. The road roller was at work, but the question of blinding .was holding it back. Ho asked permission to have all outlet drains cleaned before a downfall of rain. Air. AlcLaugliliii bad completed his shingle contract at Roebuck Road, but the work was not yet completed. He had ordered pipes, and would have the road put in order as soon as possible. 11l regard to screenings, Cr. AY’liinray moved that tbo AVorks Committee and the Overseer proceed to Air. Baty’s place to ascertain the amount of blinding available there. —Cr. Pettie seconded. —Carried. The report was adopted.
