ROWING.
P.B. CLUB PRESIDENT’S FOURS. Last night the Poverty Bay Club continued tho races in the President’s lours competition, the first round being completed. In the first race G. Peterson (str), J McConnell, A. Briscoe, and F. Airy met C. Somervell (str), T. McConnell, W. H Davy, and A. E. Lyiord. Both crews got away to an even start, but Peterson drew away at the junction of the rivers. Somervell’s crew, however, were rowing weii, and they overhauled Peterson’s when the Ivaiti bridge was reached. From this point a good race ensued, each crew working hard, Somervell eventually winning by a length. The second race was between J. Stewart (str), B. Lowe, F. Fox, and C. E. Whitfield,, and J. Webb (str), A. Burnett, W. Robertson, and C. Ferguson. Stewart gained a slight advantage at tho start, and holding it- throughout won by a length. To-night the second round will be rowed, when J. Nicholas (str), C. Winter, F. E. Porter, and C. Orr will meet Stewart’s crew, and F. Seymour (str), W. Brokensliire, E. Tliaxter, and J. Teesdale will meet Somervell’s crew, McLeod (str), R. McGuffie, W. Pritchard, and A. M. Orpwood drawing the bye.
LICENSED VICTUALLERS’ SHIELD.
A meeting of delegates from both clubs was held last night- to make arrangements for the races for the Licensed Vicuallers’ Shield, Mr. G. 13. Oman occupied the chair. Messrs D. E. Dustin and A. E. Smith represented tho Gisborne Club, and Messrs A. M. Orpwood, M. McLeod, and S. Ledger were present on behalf of tho Poverty Bay Club. It was decided that the races should be rowed on Saturday, April 11th.
If woathor permits tho senior race is to bo rowed in from tho bay, and if that is not possible it will bo rowed on the Turuhe'ru course. The ton-stone and junior races will bo rowed on tho Wainmta course.
The question of instituting a youths’ fours race was gono into,and it was decided to defer consideration to a future date.
.THE WORLD'S CHAMPIONSHIP
WANGANUI, Feb. 11. There has boon a groat revival of interest in local aquatics as the -result of the St a n bury-Webb and •Webb-Tresidder sculling matches. To-night a race between McDonald and Marshall, of tho Wanganui Rowing Club, resulted in <a win -for McDonald. At the same time there upon the river two “eights,” several .four-oared boats, doublo sculls, and single sculls. Tresiddor, who was to have gone up tho river to Upokongaro to-day, remained in town to witness the McDonald-Marslrall match, lie having 'taken -a lively interest in tho training operations of the contestants, -and given them iiisofni hints.
Webb and Tresiddor wore out as usual io day.
