TE AUTE ASSOCIATION.

MAORI NEWSPAPERS. Press Association. AUCKLAND, Feb. 27. The question of running a Maori newspaper aroused a good deal of discussion at the sittings of the Te Aute Association. One speaker pointed out that European papers could not reach the Maori population, and that it was necessary to have a paper which would combine interest with vitality. Many speakers spoke approvingly of the plan, but it was generally agreed that the existing Maori paper, the “Pipiwharauroa,” which was under the control of the Association, should be taken in hand, enlarged, and filled with subjects that would be of general interest to all the Maori people. The Rev. F. Bennett said that he was instrumental in the founding of the “Pipiwharauroa.” At that time there were many rival papers in the field, but now the “Pipiwharauroa” alone was left, and it remained with the Association to make that the one Maori paper, and to eliminate matter which was of purely local interest, thereby making it acceptable to all the tribes. Mr Te Wheroa then put forward a motion, which was seconded and carried, to the effect that the “Pipiwharauroa” be made the standard Maori paper.
