The opening day of tho Tologa Bav Jockey Club’s annual meeting was held yesterday. The weather was excellent, and the arrangements, in the capable hands of Mr. W. E. Holder, the energetic secretary, wero complete in every detail. Messrs. Lucas and Martin had charge of the totalisator arrangements, and everything worked' smoothly. Music was supplied at intervals throughout the day by the Hauiti Brass Band under the conductorship of Mr A. Lang. Ten bookmakers were present, and did a very brisk business. The course was in excellent order, and some fairly fast times were registered. The amount put through the totalisator for the day was £2929, being an increase of £430 on the amount for the corresponding day last year. The catering was excellent, and was carried out by Mr S. A. F. Morgan. Through the courtesy of Miss Pilcher, of the Gisborne Exchange, who is on relieving duty at Tolaga, the results of the races and tho acceptances for to-day were got through in good time. Time, 2min 42sec. After weighing in an inquiry was held into the running of Te Raliui, who had been hard held all through the race, and Barron, the rider, explained that he mistook. the winning post, and also that he wished to save his mount as much as possible in view of a later race. These explanations were not, however, considered to be satisfactory, and Barron was suspended for the remainder of the meeting.
