United Press Association—Copyright LONDON, March 24. Obituary: The Duke of Devonshire, at Cannes, from heart failure, the age of 75.

The Duke of .Devonshire succumbed to pneumonia contracted at Cairo, and aggravated by the fatigue of the journey to Cannes. King Edward sent a message of condolence to the Duchess. The newspapers pay a warm tribute to his memory, and the Chronicle describes him as a great Englisman. There are many signs of mourning in the localities wherewith the Duke of Devonshire was associated. Lords Itipon, Lansdowne, and Rosebery, in the House of Lords, and Mr. Asquith, and Rt. Hon. A. J. Balfour, in the Commons, paid their tribute to the late Duke’s sincerity, conviction, and devotion to duty.

[The deceased peer, who was tho eighth in succession in the ducal house of Devonshire, was tho eldest son of the seventh Duke, and succeeded his father to the -title in 1891. He married the Dowager Duchess of Manchester in 1892, was Lord of the Admiralty in 1863, Secretary of State for War 1866, Secretary of State for India 1880-2, iand again Secretary of State for War from 1882 until 1885, besides occupying other- important Cabinet appointments. Ho was a Felow of the Itoyal Society, and Lord Rector of Glasgow University. The Duke was a great -lover of art, possessing valuable picture galleries at Hardwicke and Devonshire, and a statuo gallery at Chatsworth. Ho ■is succeeded by his nephew, tho Rt. Hon. Victor Cavendish, M.P.]
