A SPLENDID WORK.

HOME OF COMPASSION. REFUGE FOR RESCUED CHILDREN. (Special to “Times.”) WELLINGTON, April 15. The stall-holders anti others who assisted at the recent fete at tho Home of Compassion met yesterday, and handed to Mother .Mary Joseph Auberfc a cheque for over £SOO. Tho Rev. Mother, who, at 83, is still, energetic, is a French woman, of good family, who has devoted her whole life to helping the poor and needy. Tho Home of Compassion is filled principally with decrepit and imbecile children, rescued, in .many cases, from deplorable surroundings. These children are now well looked after by tho venerable Mother and tho sisterhood who work with her, and some streams of sunshine are thereby brought into their terribly sad Jives. A stroll through the ward with a medical man reveals some interesting but deplorable cases. One cannot help thinking that many of the poor little things would be better out of the world, but as that cannot be, the visitor is pleased t-o see them so wellcared for and so kindly treated. There is still a debt of £6600 on the Home, and subscriptions from any part of the colony will be welcome in aid of the splendid work that is being done. Amongst tho recent contributions are liis Excellency the Governor, £lO 10s; Mr. C. P. Skerrott, K.C., £26 ss; Sir Geo. Clifford, £25; Miss Felix Campbell, £lO 10s; Mies Malono.v, £10; Hon. Kathleen Plunket, £5; Dr. Herbert, £3 3s; D.1.C., £26; “Cencis,” £2; and Petone Railway Workshops (10 workers), £2.
