WELLINGTON, May 9, An old man named Michael Higgins was sentenced by Mr. Riddell, S.M., to three months’ hard labor on a charge of being an idle and disorderly person and begging alms. It was said that £6 or £7 was missed from a house shortly after Higgins had been there begging. AUCKLAND, May 10. A man named Amos dropped d ea( l in Queen Street this afternoon on liis way to Onehunga tb,catch the Wellington boat. He is believed to have relatives in Wellington. DUNEDIN, May 10. The police have received advice to the effect that Mrs. Gray, an old woman residing in Dunedin, died suddenly to-day at Milton, where she liad been on a visit. ASHBURTON, May. 9.
•Miss J. Smith, aged 25, died suddenly to-day. She was out visiting last night and returned at 10 o’clock in usual health, but this morning complained of not being well and died at noon. At the inquest this afternoon the jury returned a verdict in accordance with tlie medical testimony, that death’ was due to •heart disease.
