MEETING AT TE ARAI.
A PUBLIC DOMAIN SCHEME. A representative meeting of tlio new To Arai settlers was held last evening at the Te Arai schoolroom for the purpose of discussing the advisability of forming a Domain Board with tlio object of taking over the woolshcd section as a public domain and the woolshed as a public hall. There was a good attendance of settlers, and Mr. Glias. Gibson took tlio chair.
After discussion it was decided that the proposition to use the building as a shearing shed and a public hall was unsatisfactory, and on tlio motion of Mr. E. Roberts (chairman of the school committee) seconded by Mr. J. Daulton, it was resolved to approach the Land Board with a view to securing the present stock reserve, a section comprising 3 acres and 3 roods, situated directly opposite the To Arai school, as a, public domain and public hall site. * In Support of his motion, Mr. Roberts spoke strongly against the stock paddock being used in such close proximity to the school, and pointed out the dangers to which the children were exposed when cattle were being yarded. . Several speakers favored the stock reserve being placed near the woolshed, so tliat tlie use of the present yards might be obtained. The matter was loft in the hands of the chairman, who is to draft a letter to the Commissioner for Crown Lands, and a strong deputation was formed to wait on the Land Board at its next sittings at Gisborne.
