MATAWHERO STOCK SALES.

Am overstocked and consequently slack market ruled at Matawhero yesterday. Buyers were low and bidding slow, and a largo number of pens, both of fat and store stock, failed to reach the reserve, and were passed in. Farmers who sent stock from a distance had to accept the low rates ruling or drive tlioir cattle and sheep homo again. SHEEP. The yarding of sheep ran into about 15,000, prices showing a decline all round. Fat wethers sold from 10s Gd to 13s, and fat ewes from 9s 6d to 12s. The store sheep showed fair quality, but ns the market was lifeless, prices did not advance. Ewes were not wanted, but the few pens of forward wethers brought fair competition. CATTLE.

The cattlo pons contained about 500 hriad, mostly stores, some of which were in forward condition. Prices.fell far short of owners’ requirements, more than half the yarding being passed in. Fat steers sold—2 at £7 7s Gd, 2 at £6 10s, 1 at £5 15s. Fat heifers £3 12s Gd, fat cows from £4 10s to £5 15s;- forward steers from £3 to £4 ss, 10 young steers in nice condition £1 10s, 13 cows with 11 calves at foot £4, two-years-old steers from £2 to £2 10s.

Pigs: A few weaners sold at from 8s 6d to 13s Gd.

NAPIER, May 14. The Colonial Consignment and Distributing Company cable the following report on frozen meat: The general tone of the market is weaker, and values have declined. To-day’s quotations are: Canterbury mutton 4gd, Napier, Wellington, and North Island 3|d. Lamb, first quality ofd, second 5Jd. Beef, hindquarters 3{jtl, forequarters 3id.
