WATERWORKS CONTRACT.
REPAIR AVORK PROCEEDING.
Tire delay iu repairing tlie Te Ara, water reams was the subject of a discussion at the meeting of the Borough Council last evening, when the Town Clerk read the following lettei from the Engineer (Mr. It. flay):— “I enclose the following copies of correspondence between myself anti the Spiral Steel Pipe Company iu reference to the waterworks contract” : The following were the letters; ‘To the Chairman of the Spiral Steel Pipe Company. Dear Sir, — i am in receipt ot yours of April *22 nd, aud regret to learn that your company has not yet taken tire work pi hand for completing your contract tor the Gisborne water supply as promised in your letter of April Bth, and the work is delayed unnecessarily, i am not aware that I have asked you to do anything more than was stated iu the original specifications, but should there arise anything • that is Beyond that mentioned in the contract I shall certainly certify for any extra cost, and I don’t think I can say anything fairer than that. I must ■again call upon you to energetically carry your contract to a satisfactory completion. My instructions from the Borough Council are very explicit and unless the contract is*at once proceeded with I shall he compelled to exercise the powers set out in your contract. Quite independently ol the hood damage, there are still some miles of your pipe-line that have yet to give proper results before it can be taken ovr. Trusting I shall hear that you have rc-counncnecd the work, —I am, etc., P- HAi. “Dunedin, April 2<th. To which letter the following reply was received: “Wanganui, May Ist. “Wo cannot admit that the work is delayed unnecessarily. However, rolying on your undertaking that all work that is not strictly within what - can be legally or reasonably demanded of us under the very trying com ditions will he certified for as additional cost, we have decided to proceed with the work. The work will he placed in the hands of Mr. Hair a, and we have very grave doubt it it is possible for men to work in tins Tavine or gully in the winter, particularly as the water will bo of low temperature. If wo find the men Will not, or cannot, work, we may havo to apply to you to suspend the work until tire summer. In the mean? time, however, we will make the attempt. We applied to lire Gisborne ‘Borough Council for part payment of the £1)000 due to us, but it was declined, and in face of your stute- „ menb that tire damage could be re- — under £IOOO we consider the -refusal) harsh 'and; unreasona-bto. 'Would you please ask Mr. Wilkinson to give all his instructions in writing so as to avoid any nioro misunderstandings. (Signed) A. HATKICK. Bor the Spiral Steel ripe Co.” * - l' lo Mayor said tire matter called for no discussion, as Mr. Hay was attending to the interests of the " Council.
