THE “GAME HOG.”

STRONGLY CONDEMNED AT WELLINGTON.

GUN LICENSES RECOMMENDED.

(Special to “Times ’.) - WELLINGTON, May 22. Mr. W. C. Bruce, formerly one of the orators in the New Zealand Parliament, ■ takes a great interest in. acclimatisation, and his remarks at the annual meeting of the Society were always welcomed with hearty applause. The “game hog,'” the so-called "sport,” whose only desire is to shoot more birds in a day’ than anyone else;, was, strongly denounced by him at the meeting of the Society’ in Wellington on Wednesday night. Steps ought to be taken, lie urged, to prevent tho wholesale extermination of pigeons and ducks that -is going on. die also objected to the pictures ot slaughterers with hundreds of head of game around them being published 111 illustrated papers. There was another thing that he objected to, and that was the idea that some people had that if they owned a lake they could, if they choose, shoot all the ducks that' settled there; Such people should regard themselves as guardians of sport, and not become slaughterers. As a remedy he urged the establishment of gun licenses, and a limitation of “bags,” but he added that all their efforts would be more or less fruitless unless they could command the mighty force of public opinion.- Mi'. Bruce’s remarks met with the hearty approval of the meeting.

Mr. Leonard Tripp, during the course of the meeting, availed himself of the opportunity rffMvsd to thank the Government for passing the Animals’ Protection Act vliicli, lie, said, would be of great benefit N; the Society. Ho also thanked the Government for instructing the poLce to help them iu their work.
