GISBORNE CITY BAND.

A meeting of the management committee of the City Band was- -held in the Band-shed last ovendng for -the purpose of forming a citizens’ committee to act in conjunction with the committee of the band. In addition to the members of the band, thero were present Messrs J. Townley, A. G. Beere, H. Miller, W. Webb, P. Maher, B. Hird ,and Geo. Darton. Mr. A. Young, chairman of the band, presided, and submitted a statement of tho assets and liabilities of the band, which showed a deficit of nearly £3OO, including a liability. of £175, which the band had to take over on the amalgamation of tho Gisborne Hi lies Band with the City Band. The expenses of the last contest, tho pur* chase of new uniforms, and other outlays were responsible for the band getting into debt. With a view of clearing off this liability the meeting decided to invite the general public to become honorary members at an annual subscription of os. Jt is hoped by this means that a considerable amount of revenue will be raised and the band will be brought more m touch with, the public. The band proposes to give a series of popular and sacred concerts during the coming year, all of which will be free to honorary members. In addition to the concerts the band will submit to the Borough Council a programme of open-air performances, which will be given throughout the year. It was also decided that the hand would play at all public functions free of charge. It ivas pointed out that for the past few months the band has been somewhat disorganised, and have not been able to give as many public performances as was intended. Hownow that the services of a nonconductor have been secured, the position, of the band lias materially changed, and it will be in a position to give more public performances. It is hoped, therefore, that they will receive the support from the public that their efforts deserve. *
