FRUIT BLIGHT.
THE SAN JOSE SCALE. DISCOVERED 'IN NELSON'. (Press Association.) ’Wellington, June is. “Yes, it is a fact that the San Jose •scale has been observed in some son orchards,” said Mr. T. W. Kirk, the Government Biologist to an interviewer this morning. Mr. Kirk explaied that the scale, had been found by Mr. Black-more, Government Poraologist, and his assistants, on a few trees. Tile destructive character of the scale was so well known to all. orehardist-s, owing to accounts front America and Australia, that the Inspectors have had no difficulty in persuading owners of the orchards to t ike drastic -steps to suppress the disease. One or two trees which were badly affected have been destroyed, whilst the others in the orchards in question have .been sprayed with the lime, salt, and sulphur mixture. This treatment will be repeated at an early date. Mr. Kirk added that the Department could he relied upon to keep a strict watch upon the scale.
