Considerable excitement was caused at the Public Library yesterday afternoon owing to the discovery of a fire in tlio reference department, w-hieli is contained in a- portion of tho south-west wing of the building. The fire took place in the shelving in the balcony portion of the department, and before it was got under four volumes of the “Minutes of tho Council on Education” and a’volumo entitled “New Methods of Education,” -by J. Liberty Todd had. beendaniaged. Two qf tlie volumes of tho “.Minutes” are badly damaged, and ill the volumes will h'avo to bo replaced. Indications were discovered that apparently point to the outbreak being the work of an incendiary or of incendiaries. The police are making inquiries into tho -affair. The insurances -are divided between local companies, .and- the total on tho buildings is £7250, and on tho books, fittings, etc., £10,700. . .
