At a meeting of the Conciliation Board to-dav it was intimated thatthe masters did not desire to give evidence in the engineers’ dispute, and the statement was accepted. In connection with the election of three members to the Public Service Superannuation Board* the Executive of the New Zealand Civil Service Association resolved to-night to recommend Messrs G. Allport (Wellington), H. W. Bishop, S.M. (Christchurch), and H. R. Spcnco (Auckland) for the support of the Association’s members throughout tlio Dominion. The Minister for Public Works has promised the Paparoa. Coalmining Company to open the Blackball railway very early next year. At a meeting of the Police Provident Board to-day, annual pensions were granted as follows: —Chief-De-tective AV. L. Chrystall (Christchurch) £l4O, retiring medically unfit; Detective Henderson (Auckland) £164, retiring on age limit; Constable C. Cooper (Ara-moho) £lOl, retiring medically unfit. Ruling on the question raised under the cooks’ and waiters’ award, the Arbitration Court decided that the limit fixed for each day’s work cannot be exceeded, even although employers may be willing to pay overtime for work done in excess of that limit. Thus an employer is not ontitled to require a waiter to work more than eleven hours in any one day.
