AN ENGINEEER’S DEATH.
THIS RESULT OF AN ACCIDENT. [Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, Juno 18. Mr. J. Gilroy, chief engineer of tho Union Company’s steamer Kaituna, who had -both foot out oil’ by being knocked down and run over by railway trucks in Lyttelton station yard on Monday afternoon,' died in tho casualty ward yesterday after being operated upon mid having both legs amputated. Mr. Gilroy never properly regained consciousness. It was sea reel v expected that ho would recover from tho oflccts ol his terrible injuries, and ho gradually sank and died from shock at 4.35 p.m. yesterday. , , Mr. Gilroy, who was 54 years or age. was a native of East Lothian, and had boon in New Zoalancl about 35 yoars. 110 was ono of the longest servico engineers in tho Union Company’s employment, having joined their servico about 25 years ago. Mr Gilroy sorved in a number of the Company’s steamers, and has been engineer of the Knnieri, Southern Cross, Muhinapua, Herald. Corinna, Taleri, and, latterly, of tho Kaituna. Ho was a widower, and leaves two grown-up sons. His homo was an Mornington, Dunedin, and tho body will be taken to Dunedin for burial. At the inquest -hold this afternoon a. verdict of accidental death was returned, no blame being .attachable to anyone. A rider was added that tho Railway Department should bo recommended to station a mail on tho wharf side of the railway crossing to warn pedestrians and others of tho dangers of shunting operations. The Coroner said lie agreed with tho mlor and would forward it to tho general manager of tho Railway Department.
