FOOTBALL.

This afternoon, on Victoria Domain, fifteen of the “flower” ot loverly B ly will meet a team composed of To Jvaraka forwards and Gisborno backs. Under ordinary curcumstanccs tho mutch would probably have been a good ono,. as the To Karaka men are reported to be a fine lot, ami havo been practising for some time, whilst tho hacks behind them are not to bo despised. Tho opposing team would, therefore, probably have had to oxort themselves to secure a victory. However, the inclement wcathor and tho consequent greasy state of the.playing field has somewhat altered matters, although it will be interesting to see how some of tho players shape under adverse weather conditions. For it must not bo forgotten —and it is a point often overlooked —that it is not improbable that the British match might have'to be played under just such conditions —or, perhaps worse—as prevail to-day and. in some respects, it is satisfactory that the selectors will have the opportunity of seeing players under conditions other than thoso which have prevail'd during tho season. Nevertheless, tho game should still be worth watching, and as tho team to represent Poverty Bay against Waiapu, which will also probably be a fair indication of tho team for the British match, will be chosen this evening, the players will doubtless put forward their best efforts in a'(strenuous endeavor to catch the selectors’ eyes. The teams will play in tho colors of the West End and Kaiti-City Clubs, and players are requested by the Union to procure, jerseys. The game, which commences at 3 p.m., will lie under tho control of Mr. 11. Walker, and the teams will bo captained by A. T. Kaipara and J. S. Thompson. Previous to tho above game .a challenge mat-ch botwoen the employees of Messrs Wado and Gray and F. Hall and Sons will ho played, tho game commencing at 1.40 p.m. On No. 2 ground, tho third grade match, Kaiti-City v. Takitimu, will lie played ot 1.40 p.m. Mr. C'. Somervell will be referee. At 3 p.m. Kaiti-City juniors meet Takitimu juniors, tho game being in charge of Mr. O Olsen.

The team to represent Takitimu juniors this afternoon will bo picked from tlie following Campbell (2), Lowthor, Dunlop, Snowden, Andrew, Clarice, 'Hughes, Kora, Morphy, O’Donnell, Callaghan, Pilcher, Heni, Kara, Craill, McConnell, Roderick. Tlie Takitimu third fifteen will bo as follows: Alorell (2), Craill, Stevens. Wilkinson, Breignan, Fraser. Goldsmith, Crump, Lloyd, Riddell, Hiki, Ipu Kara, Qtijnn, Robinson, THE BRITISH TEAM. [Press Association.] . NELSON, Juno 19. The British footballers, with the exception of half a dozen who came by tho steamer yesterday, arrived ovorland to-night, having experienced fine weather throughout tlie twodays’ coaching. A largo crowd assembled to witness the official reception of the visitors, who were formally welcomed by the Mayor and Dr. Andrew (president of tlie Nelson Rugby Union). Tho weather for tlie past few days lias been fine, and tho ground is in good order. There is every prospect of a fine day to-morrow, and a big attendance. The British team selected is:—Jackett (full back); Gibbs, McEvedy. Ponty Jone 6, J. L. Williams (three-quarters); W. Morgan, Jones “Guy's” (halves); Dibble, Jackson. Morgan, Down, Green, Rit.6oll, Archer, and J. F. Williams (forwards).
