LONDON, Juno 23. The Pan-Anglican Congress discussed Christianity and Socialism. Tho Bishop of Birmingham sent a paper claiming that, tho Church ought t<y make u tremendous act of poniteneo for so long failing to belmvo ns champion of 'the oppressed and tho weak. Major Everitt, an Australian, declared that Socialistic legislation benefited Australia.
Lord William Cecil put the case against Socialism in the interests ol tho poor. Ab tho poor man’s friend lie pleaded that the nock ol the poor should not be put under tho iron heel of Government. •
Senator Dobson, of Tasmania, admitted that it wns a delusive hope that tho Stuto would bo able to t-ako over immediately all means of production and distribution, but an advance could bo made.
Tho Bishop of Perth condemned tho sale of advowsons.. Ho advocated the election of bishops upon tlio plan followed in. the case of tho Bishop of Bunbury. Mr. Arthur Balfour delivered an address on the conflict of scienco and religion, declaring-that it was impossible to conceive, a human society permanently deprived of the religious element, but personally ho looked to science more than anything else as tho groat ameliorator of the human lot. He did not believe those two great powers would be in. immutable and perpetual antagonism. The Bishop of Newcastle described the work of the Church in Australia.
