OFFICERS OF THE HOUSE
The familiar figure of tho feemennt-iit-Aims (Major Sheppard) will l>e missed from tho ceremony at the opening of Parliament on Monday. He lias been seriously all, and has been granted a month’s leavo of absence. Mr. O’Callighan has been appointed acting-Sergoant-at-Arms. Another officer of the House seriously ill at tho present timo is Mr. W. Leslie, of tho “Hansard” staff. 110 has been suffering from heart trouble for somo considerable timo, 'and it is extromoly doubtful if ho will bo able to toko his place in tho gallery this s oss ion.
A NEW ELECTRIC LAMP. Tho City Council has boon experimenting with a now electric lamp known as the Osrn.n. This lamp, it is stated, makes a littlo electricity go a long way. It is hoped that .its adoption will furthor populariso electric lighting. THE iMAORI PROPHET. Tho long-haired followers of the “prophet” Rua aro conspicuous in the streets just now. Pressmen have boon interviewing Rua, but ho does not. speak much English. According to Ins own 'admission tho power of “prophet” is not great, for ho looks to tho Hon. Mr. Carroll to put his grievances right. ' “Ho to goot man,” said Ihn. Ono of llua’s l.ioutonants, when aproached by a local pressman for an- interview,'asked for payment, which leads to tho conclusion that wo have not been spelling the title correctly, and that it should bo tho “profit” Rua.
GOVERNMENT OFFICERS'. Mr. Morgan O’Moara has been rotired from the positions held by him ns inspector under the “Dairy Industry Act, 1898,” and Inspector under tho “Noxious Weeds Act, 1900,” as from tho 30th April. 1908. Thomas “William Ivirk, Robert Gibb, William Bayley Bray, Lena Livesay, and Olive Kent have been appointed Inspectors from the purpose of the “Apiaries Act, 1907.”
