RELIEF TO SETTLERS.
the Supply of grass-seed. (Specilal to “Times.”) WELLINGTON, July 12. _ Some particulars of the supply of grass-seed to tile settlers affected by the hush fires of last summer are given in the annual report of the Lands Department, which was presented to Parliament on Friday. Every settler who was in need of seed, states the report, and unable to buy it immediately, was either given an order upon a seed merchant nominated by himself, or supplied by the local Commissioner of Crown Lands direct with seed in such mixture as applied for, the terms of payment being the signing of a promissory note for the amount owing payable in two, three, or four years without interest-. These terms wore availed of by 646 settlers in the North Island, who were supplied with seed valued at £24,082. 11l the South Island 67 eases representing £2756 were dealt with. More than half the amount went, to the Wellington district, viz., £13,578. Tiie Auckland district’s proportion was £7913.
