RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION IN SCHOOLS.
A WELLINGTON DISCUSSION
[Press Association.]
WELLINGTON, July 13. The Wellington Diocesan Synod today discussed a resolution expressing approval of tlie New South Wales educational system by which teachers 0 f various religious denominations have permission to visit State schools within ordinary school hours for -the purpose of giving instruction. It was suggested that a committee be set up to formulate a scheme for New Zealand, to be referred to the next session of the General Synod, with a view to making representations to Parliament for • an amendment of the Education Act. The mover of the resolution said that tile present facilities for giving religious instructions were not satisfactory. Religious instruction should form part of the ordinary curriculum, and it must be given by people who believed in t-lie facts they imparted. Several speakers said it was merely ! > beating the air to bring on stick a resolution as the people would not agree to a change. , Eventually the Synod carried a resolution to proceed with the next business on the order paper.
