MONDAY, JULY 13. (Before Mr \V. A. Barton, SAL) DRUNKENNESS. A first offender was convicted and lined os with costs 2s in default 2-1 hours imprisonment with hard labor. Charles Single, on hail, faded to appear. Constable Pratt gave evidence, iind accused was convicted and lined 18s with 2o costs or -18 hours’ hard labor. James McConvijlo lor a second offence within six months was convicted and lined £1 with 2a costs in default I days’ imprisonment. I! chard Solomon, who was making his fourth appearance within six inonthn ivus again cunrieted and sentenced to 3 months hard labor in Napier gaol. Ed want Hogan, alias Griffiths for a third offence in the same period, was ordered to 14 days’ hard labor in tlio Gisborno Police gaol, A prohibition older was aiso issued against accused. PROCURING LIQUOR. ■James MeConville pleaded guilty to a charge of procuring liquor during the currency of a prohibition order against him. Mr Salisbury appeared on behalf of -accused and slid that accused was evidently the victim of had company in Gisborne. Counsel asked Ilia Worship to take a lenient view of the ease, as accused intended to go to either Wellington or Auckland on Wednesday, to follow his oc-eupatioii-QS a tailor. 11 is Worship regretted that he was ti u a bio to accede to counsel’s request to take a lenient view of tlio question, as ho had previously warned accused as to what would happen if ho

Richard Solomon pleaded guilty to a similar charge and was- lined £lO and 2s costs or two months’ hard labor in the same gaol, the sentences lor drunkenness and the offenco to be cumulative.
Addressing accused His Worship said: “If these sentences do not have tho desired effect, and you come before mo again, I shall probably deem it advisable to send you to the Inebriates Institution iff Auckland. The Act says that a person shall not be sent there for a lees period than twelve months, but 1 shall most likely have to mako Ot two or three yea : in your else. When you come out of prison, the drink will bo thoroughly out of your system, and if you take my advice, you will never touch liqiior again. If you do, you will get into serious trouble. BREACH OF BY-LAAVS.
A youth named Frederick Muliony was lined 10s with 7s costs for having ridden a bicycle in Childer’s Road after dark, and without lights.
