MORAL EDUCATION OF CHILDREN.
THE LAXITY OF PARENTS. MAGISTRATE’S STERN STRICTURES. [Press Association.] AUCKLAND, July 21. The laxity of parental control at the ji resent time ivas the subject of some stringent remarks at the Police Court this afternoon, in the course of a case in which a twelve-year-old' boy was charged avith stealing jeaa'ellery and money. “The general laxity among the young people is simply appalling,” said Mr. Kettle. “There seems to be a- avidespread' disregard to the rights of property and moral obligations more and more. I can see, inside and outside of tile Court, that the loose bringing up of children in the absence of anything like true home 'influence, neglect to inculcate a proper appreciation and reverence of the holy, and the consequent and deplorable disrespect of children for their' elders, is a living scandal to our society, and is tending to undermine the whole moral and social farbric.” He ordered the boy in question to receive tavelve strokes of the birch.
