CITY COUNCIL'S ACTION. WORK TO BIS.FOUND. , r , [Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, July . 21. In compliance with the decision of the Citv Council at its meeting tonight, the Works Committee met tins afternoon to decide upon work to which the unemployed shall bo put. It was decided to employ, on the work of improving the river banks, men who were in urgent need of assistance, and who could not obtain work through the Labor Bureau. An examination of the list presented to ;he Council last night shows that it ■ contains the names of 58 married men and 57 singlo men. These have 191* dependents. Of these whose ippear on the list, 42 do not state . whether they are married or not, nor how long they have been out of work. There are the names of 82 •aborers, 19 carpenters, 7 painters. 6 butchers, 5 gardeners, 5 blacksmiths, md a lesser number of hotel employees, bricklayers, drivers, cycle tradesnen, general smiths and farriers, plasterers, slaughtermen, clerks,salesmen, pastry-cooks, pattern-makers, fitters, tailors, asphalters, grocers, compositors, and motor drivers. The Mayor has not received any reply from the Premier to the resolutions ’ of the unemplo3 - ed meeting held on Saturday afternoon, which were forwarded to Wellington. The officer in charge of the local Labor Bureau states that work on the Midland railway and on the West Coast can bo found for all who apply. About 100 men put their names down to-day, and such as are willing to go will be sent on- Thursday., morning.
