On Victoria Domain this afternoon at 1.40 City and Alhambra will meet, and as botli tennis are reported strong a lively contest will doubtless eusuo. At 3 p.m. Gisborne anil Star will play their third game. In tho two previous matches each has defeated the other once, and although Gisborne is at present the leading team it is not improbable that Star may effect a surprise. ' City will bo represented to-day as follows: 11. Huston, Taylor, Sharp, Roderick, Puflott (capt.), Grinlinton, Cramp, J. Roderick, Henley, Bnagge, McPherson, Lyford,-O’Neill, Grant, and Bright. . Alhambra will put tho following team on tho field: Somervell, Oman, Tate, Campbell, Hart, Johnson, Cantoll, Clark, McConnell, Wilkinson, Cahill, West, Stafford, Charters, and Brady (wing); emergencies, Oasley, L. Wilkinson, anil Clark.
Yesterday afternoon a match was played at Victoria Domain between teams representing the Gisborne School and tho working hoys, and resulted in a victory for the latter by 8 poins to nil. W. A letter was received from tho Taranaki Rugby Union by tho Auckland Union to-night accepting tlio date of August 29 for the Shield match between the representatives, of .tho provinces. THE BRITISH TOUR. THIRD TEST MATCH. [PnESs Association.] AUCKLAND, July 22. W. J. Stead, ’of Southland, was unanimously elected captain of the New Zealand team to-day. The curtain-raisers for Saturday’s test match will be representative matches between the Auckland Secondary Schools’ Union and Maori Colleges, and, later, between Auckland B and Franklin Union. Mr. Angus Campbell has accepted the position of referee for Saturday’s test match. The'< British team will return tomorrow evening from Rotorua. THE NORTHERN UNION GAME. AN INVERCARGILL LEAGUE. [Press Association.] INVERCARGILL. July 22. A meeting to-night of about 40 people interested in football decided to form a Northern Union League. Enough players are available for two teams. The Maoris played a Metropolitan team, chiefly composed of men who have not previously figured in representative play. The local men scored 13 to the visitors’ nil in the first half, and maintained their advantage .to half-way through the second spell. Then tho Maoris completely ran over them, and scored •as they pleased, winning by 34 t 0 13.
