FOOTBALL.

SATURDAY COMPETITIONS. There was only a moderato attendance at tho Domain on Saturday nitornoon when tho banner competition was continued. Tho ground was an excellent ordor, but tho principal event of the day, tho senior game between West End and Tukitimu, was of a very poor ordor. Takitimu could only mustor 11 playors, and only a few of tlioso woro thoir regular senior players, tho romaintler being drawn trom the socoud and third fifteens. Considorablo interest centred m the junior match botweon, Ivaiti-City and West End, as tlio former team had to register a win to give them a chanco in tho competition. Most of tho spectators witnessed tho game, only amore handful watching tlio seniors. Early in tho afternoon tho High School team met tho second fifteen of tho Napier High School and put up a "reat fight .agninst ft much hoavier team, tho ganio ending ill a scoreless draw. WEST END 29 V. TAKITIMU 6 The Takitimu skipper won tlio toss and decided to attack t-lio eastern coal, and Hakiwai kicked off for » cstEnd. None of the players appeared to take tho game seriously and this was noticablo all through. Loose plav was the order of tho day, with Takitimu holding thoir opponents well in check, considering thoir weak team. From a- penalty kick in tho Reds’ twenty-five, Brown Turei .drew first blood for West End. Ktupara made a nice run along tlio line after tlio kick-out and after a loose passim* and scrambling rush Heko got. goal. Shortly afterwards Hoke again scored and Newton kicked a good goal. The Takitimu men wero now on the aggressive and held the Blacks on their, own line. From a throw-m 'Lyons got possession and scored for tlio Reds amidst applause. Thompson failed at goal. Further wild plav took place ■ and just as tho whistle went for half-time Newton obtained a try which Miller converted. The first spell ended with the scores West- End 16, Takitimu 3. ' Reluctantly tlio players came back to re-commenco the farce, and the second spoil was pretty well a repetition of tho first. A great deal of looso kicking and scrambling was witnessed, although there was also some good tackling on the part of several of tho Takitimu men. West End added 13 points to their total, while Takitimu added. 3. Ivaipara, Nowton, and Malloy scored for the Blacks; Stewart and Malloy converting two of tlio tries. Lyons again scored for Takitimu, but Thompson missed an easy kick at a goal. The ganio finally ended, to the relief of players and spectators alike, with the scores

West End 29 Takitimu 6 Mr. L. .Williams refereed. JUNIOR MATCH. KAITI-GITY 13, WEST END NIL. This was a good game, although, with the exception of the first fifteen minutes, the Blues had all the best of the play, and eventually won comfortably. In the first spell Witty secured a nice try which was converted by Fitzgerald ,and Bristow and Fitzgerald both obtained scores in the second spell, oiie of which was converted by the latter. West End were unlucky in not scoring early in the game, butafter twenty minutes play they never again, looked dangerous. For the winners Witty, Fitzgerald, McPherson, and Coleman were about the best, and Riwai, C. Somervell, Roche, and Charters, worked hard for the losers. Mr. J. J. Martin controlled the game. THIRD GRADE. The match between West End and Takitimu was not played to a finish. Neither club was able to put a full team in the field, and very little interest was taken in tho game by tho players. West End were leading- on scores, but left the field without the consent of the referee, Mr. Pritchard, who thereupon awarded the game to Takitimu. >- SCHOOL MATCHES. The match between the Gisborne High School and the Napier High School’s second fifteen took place on No. 1 ground prior to the senior match, and attracted a good number of spectators. Tlio Napier boys arrived by the s.s. Victoria in the morning, and having an excellent passage were in good order for the game. They were stronger and heavier than the local boys, and in the back division showed considerable superiority. The Gisborne forwards more than held their own against tlio visitors, but thoir backs wero not able to get going often, biit when they did so they gained a good deal of ground. The first spell was fairly evenly ■contested, and both sides were compelled to force on more than one occasion to avoid a score. A number of penalties wero awarded to each side in, turn, but the whistle for half-time sounded with no score registered. Early in the second spell the local boys attacked strongly, and nearly scored on several occasions. They were, however, not able to put the finishing touches on their efforts, as the defence of the Napier backs was too good. Tho visitors got in some good, passing towards, the dose of the spoil, but good defensive'play by the local boys kept them out. A really good game ended shortly afterwards in a draw, neither side being able to cross their opponents’ line. Mr. W. Howard controlled the game, and Messrs Kinder and Bargrove were the line umpires. The Napier boys returned by the s.s. Taltino last night. On Saturday morning, teams representing tho Roman Catholic School and Kaita Public School, met on Victoria Domain. Play started at 10 o’clock. The game ended in a runaway victory for the Catholic School lads by 20 points to 6. For the winners. P. Sheridan, C. Doolan, and P. 0 Sullivan played well, and were responsible for most of the scoring.
