Delaney, Nicholas, Grant, Scott, Newton, Winter, Lowe. KAITI-CITY THIRDS. On Sunday afternoon a team representing Kaiti-City thirds will leave lor Napier, returning tho following Wednesday. Matches will bo played against the Napier Old Boys and the Hastings ltevers third fifteen. MrW. Huy will bu in charge of the team, which is as follows: J?ullbaok, R. Emergency, P. O'Meara. THURSDAY COMPETITION. The Thursday competition was resumed on the Domain yesterday afternoon, when Star met Alhambra; and City played Gisborne. 'I ho weather was fine, but owing to the recent rain tho ground was very soft in places. However, the games, especially tho latter one, Mere fastThere was only a small atteru'nnco of spectators. CITY 5 v. GISBORNE 3.
City kicked off towards tho western goal and immediately swarmed into their opponents’ territory. Inside the first two minutes Gisborne were penalised, and Pullett had a fruitless shot at goaj. City crrtmued to press, and Witty nearly scored, but Morse and “Weka” Roderick relieved. Fitzgerald found touch right on tho Gisborne gpal lino, but splendid work by tlio Gisborne forwards gradually drove tho City men back to half-way. Play was now settled in tho City territory, ami Thompson had two attempts at goal iroin penalties in quick succession. Nowton was prominent with a short runand high kick, but Huston saved. Keeping up the pressure, the Gisborne backs got going, and Newton, J. Gibson, anti H. Gibson had a passing run, tlio latter being thrown into touch at tho corner llag. Sharp brought relief for City with a fine kick, but a lovely bit of passing along the lino by J. Gibson and Pollock regained the lost ground. Fast play in tho forward division followed, and the Gisborne men held tho advantage when the whistle sounded for half-time, with a blank score sheet.
After the interval City held the upper hand for a time, and were nearly over, but a loose rush of tlio Gisborne forwards carried the ball to the City line, but the latter onto more returned to the attack, and a good piece of defensive work by JPollocK saved an almost certain score. City, keeping up the pressure, confined their opponents in their own twenty-five, and Lyons getting off-side, Pullett made a poor attempt at goal from an easy angle. Loose forward rushes were the order of the day, and from another penalty Pullett had a good try at goal, just missing by a few feet. Even and hist play followed, and “Sailor” Roderick had a pot at goal, but failed. Bright followed up hard and fell on the ball as it rolled over tho linoand tho referee ruled a try. Pullett kicked a grand goal. Enlivened by this reverse, the Gisborne men played up splendidly, and made strong efforts to score. From a kick by one of the'Gisborne backs Thomp-. 6on followed up fast, and smothering, Witty’s return, play settled on tho City line.' The ball travelled fast uu and down the field, but tho Gisborne men were attacking strongly, and from a loose forward rush McConnell scored near the posts. Pollock missed an easy kick, and no further scoring took place before tho whistle declared the game over, leaving the scores: City 5, Gisborne 3. Mr. A. Pritchard refereed. STAR 21 v. ALHAMBRA 0. Alhambra took the field with five men, and were augmented at intervals by six others. The game wae naturally more or less of a practice for the Star men, who won by 21 points to nil, all scored in tho first spell. Tries were scored by Makaore (2), Kaipara, Wilkinson, and Davis, while Kaipara converted one and Karaka two. 'Mr. A. Pritchard al6o refereed in this. game. WELLINGTON MATTERS. [Press Association.] WELLINGTON, August 13. The management committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union to-night considered a protest by W. Fraser, Southland, against his disqualification for disputing a referee’s decision. Fraser denied the charge. Fraser is to bo informed that the appeal is not in order, not having been lodged within the stipulated time. At a meeting of the Wellington Rugby Union committee to-niglit, F. Murphy, of the l’oliill fourth grade team, was suspended till tho end of the 1909 season for using obsceno language during a recent match. JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVE MATCH. WANGANUI BEATS TARANAKI. [Press Association.] WANGAN UI, August 13. Tlio Wanganui v. Taranaki junior representative match was played this afternoon ill glorious weather. The teams were very even, and a closo and interesting contest resulted in a win for Wanganui by 14 to 13.
