ALLEGED THEFT.

YOUNG MAN ARRESTED

In connection with the theft from a board ing-houso in Lowe Street on Monday afternoon, when a "air of braces and trousers and 37s in silver was stolen, a smart arrest was aftected yesterday afternoon. Sergeant Hutton, with Constables Scott and Pratt, were engaged investigating the affair vesterday, and m tli© evening, about 6 p.m., the accused man was arrested in Gladstone road by Constable Pratt. Subsequent to bis arrest the suspect’s lodgings were searched, and the articles of clothing recovered from them and identified by the owner. During his search of the rooms, Sergeant Hutton noticed a tin trunk, showing maths of several labels having been scratched off, and he smartly identified it as being one which bad been previously reported stolen, and for which the police had been searching. It appears that a man named William Burnett had come to Gisborne some little time ago from Dunedin, and stayed at'the house of a Airs. Good. Ho had occasion to go into the country for ’a time, and left his tin trunk and another box at Airs. Good’s house, on the verandah. On his return, some five weeks later, Air. Burnett found that his tin trunk, containing clothing valued at £5, had been removed and an old box substituted. The matter was at once reported to the police, and enquiries were instituted, but it was not until last evening that Sergeant Hutton was able to trace the stolen box. The Sergeant recognised the box on seeing it in the room, and an examination of tho contents proved that his surmise was correct, as the clothing contained in the box was marked with Air. Burnett’s names. It also bore the appearance of having been recently worn, and was freshly soiled. Several other articles wore also found in the possession of the arrested young man, and he will bo brought before tile Court this morning and charged with the offences which it is aileged ho has committed.
