MARINE LIGHTS

A NEW DEPARTURE

An interesting demonstration of a dissolved acetylene gas lamp and flasher for marine purposes was given yesterday afternoon by Mr. J. 11. Edmundson, of the firm of Messrs Hawkins and Rome, who represent the manufacturers —The Acetylene Illuminating Company, of London. Mr. John I’ownley, Chairman of the Harbor Board, was present, and there was also a representative attendance of shipping and commercial men. Mr. Edmundson explained that dissolved acetvlene is clean, dry, purified acetvlene ready for use in cylinders. The cylinders are filled with a porous material. soaked in acetone, ga6 is pumped into the cylinders and is dissolved' by the acetone. The pressure in these cylinders is only 1501bs when fully charged. As the pressure is released, the acetone gives off the gas as wanted until the cylineder is exhausted. The lamp is used for harbor lighting: buoys, lighthouses, railway trains, and motor cars, etc. It is claimed that the gas is delivered at the burn- ))■« cool, dry, and at a steady pressure, most suitable to ensure proper combustion and . consequently maximum efficiency; it can be turned on immediately and can be turned low without choking the burners; it has no elemeiit of danger, no smell, and it does away with all unpleasant manipulations; the consumption is shown by guage, aqd the quantity remaining can be seen at a glance; the increased brilliancy of the light is due to pure gas which permits small burners to be used, and it is adaptable to any lamp. At the conclusion of the demonstration a number of diagrams were shown, and at the request of members of the Board particulars are to bo cabled for regarding the prices of certain buoy lights for the harbor. The firm have at present on order a re-charging plant for erection at Napier.
