RAILWAY WORKERS AS SETTLERS.

AVELLINGTON, August 27
Speaking in the House last evening .Air. Jennings said that a number of men would shortly - be discharged from tho Main Trunk railway works, including tho sawmill owned by the Government at Kakohi. near Taumarunui. He urged that provision should be made for settling them m the district, whore they bad resided in some instances for three years. The Minister (Hon. R. McNab) said that provision was being made for settling some of tho Main Trunk railway workers, but the Government did not wish to have bush destroyed for the purpose. Ho intended to keep track of these workers, and provide holdings for them as soon as possible, but ho did not anticipate that they could all bo placed on suitable holcliiigs as soon as the railway works were completed. Mr. Okey and Mr. Massey urged tho desirability’ of preparing the AY.aimarino and AVaiouru plains for settlement, tho latter expressing the opinion that pastoral pursuits could be profitably carried on in these districts.
