FOOTBALL.

There was a fair _ sprinkling of spectators at A’ictorin Domain yesterday afternoon to witness the Gis-borne-Bar match, and those who attended were rewarded by one of the best exhibitions,, of football seen an Poverty Bay this season. The heavy rain which had fallen earlier in the day rendered the ground greasy, and there were a number of pools of water on the field. Notwithstanding this, and tlio consequent greasy state of the ball, the handling of the leather was very accurate, the fielding and passing being well done. Tho defence of both sides was good, and somo particularly fine tackling and rushstopping was seen. GISBORNE 3 v. STAR 0.

Star won tho toss, and Lyons kicked off against the sun. Star commenced to attack, and half-a-dozen penalties in quick succession against Gisborno lost tho latter considerable ground. Campbell had a shot a t goal but failed, ami Gisborne woro forced. The “Royals” now began to assume the aggressive, and good work by tlie forwards gradually worked iStar back. A Star forward was penalised for off-side, and AYi Repa made a splendid attempt at goal from a difficult angle, the ball just missing the goal by a foot. Gisborne continued on the attack, and were nearly over on several occasions, but Star’s defence was good, and Gisborne were eich time repelled. A Star forward then got- off-side near his own twentyfive, and a freo kick was awarded, iThompson placing a line goal. Gisborno continued to press until halftime was called, tho scores then being Gisborno 3, Star 0. Tho second spell was more even, though Gisborne still had tho better of tho game. Play was fast and interesting, and surged up and down tho lioltli at a rapid rato. Rush was met with counter-rush, and both teams woro playing desperately lull'd. Lyons and Brown both got across Star’s line, but were each recalled for breaches. A free-kick to Star in close proximity to Gisborne’s goal gave Campbell a shot, but tlio kick went wide. Tho Gisborne lino was in serious danger on several occasions, but sound defensive work prevented a score being registered, and tho game finally ended with Gibsorno attacking, the scores being: Gisborno 3, Star 0. Air. AA’. Howard controlled tho game, and Alessrs Peterson and Pritchard acted as lino umpires. Tlio winning team was a very evon one, and where every man played a solid game it would be invidious to particularise. For tho losers, ICaiparn, Karaka, and Alakaoro were the pick of tho hacks, and the best of the forwards were Davis, Nicolas, and Carroll.

The players selected to take part in the match against Hawke’s Bay on September sth are requested to attend at the Domain this evening at 5 p.m. for practice.
