MARINE DEPARTMENT’S REPORT.

WELLINGTON, August 27. The annual report of the Marino Department, which was presented to Parliament yesterday states that during the year ended March list 3G2 candidates for masters’, mates’, and engineers’ certificates of proficiency passed their examinations, whilst 160 railed. Certificates were granted to 302 steamers, 77 oil engine vessels, and 13 intercolonial sailing vessels. The casualties on the New Zealand coast during the year numbered 79, representing 48,436 tons register, as compared with 90 representing 32,166 tons for the previous year. The total wrecks within tlio Dominion numbered eight (3442 tons), as against 15 (3801 tons) for the preceding year, the total number of lives lost was 30, as compared with 39 for the year previous, the amount of light dues collected during the year was £32,377, as compared with £32,454 during tile previous year. The cost of the maintenance of the New Zealand lighthouses during the year was £16,007. The fees received during the year under tho Shipping and Seamen’s Act, the Merchant Shipping Act, the Harbors Act, and the Sea Fisheries Act totalled £42,847. The sum received in pilotage and port fees, etc., was £95,400.
