A PARIS FIRE

TELEPHONE EXCHANGE DESTROYED. ENORMOUS DAMAGE DONE. United Press Association. Copyright PARIS, Sept. 22. Tho Central Paris Telephono Exchange has been destroyed by fire. The damage .amounts to £1,800,000. (Received- Sept. 22, 10.30 p.m.) The destruction of tho exchange occasioned enormous inconvenience to city subscribers and all throughout France. The latest American central battery system had just been installed at great cost, and it is believed that owing to defective insulation a short circuit occurred, causing the inflimable covering surrounding tho wires to .ignite. Fortunately, it being Sunday, only 200 women operators wero on duty, instead of 000 as on week days. All escaped, though the fire spread with extraordinary rapidity.
