The Gisborne Times. PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1908. THANKS !

Siiico tho announcement of the jury’s verdict in. tlio recent libel case instituted against tlio proprietary of this journal, wc have been inundated by messages, vorbal and written, from well-wishers jn all parts of the town and district, congratulating us upon the rosult. Olio correspondent writes in an eminently pmctical strain as follows: I regret you would not open a subscription list and allow tho public to help you in a fight on its behalf. However, I congratulate you oil your splendid victory, and as a practical expression of my feeling, I encloso a olicquo for n year’s subscription to your paper. Quito .a sheaf of telegrams also reached': this office from othor parts of tho Dominion. A typical one is that received from, Mr. A. R. Atkinson, of AA'ellington, who telegraphed as follows:

Hearty congratulations on success of your courageous .and publicspirited defence. It is tliorcforo apparent that the progress of tho recent case was watched with keen interest throughout tho Dominion, land from tho tone of the messages conveyed to us it is apparent that what, wo considered to be merely tlio fulfilment of our ordinary duty has been elevated in the minds of the public as something- of extraordinary merit. It would bo idle to deity that those numerous expressions of satisfaction and goodwill are extremely gratifying, and wo should bo something more tlnan ungracious wore we to permit the opportunity to pass without’publicly thanking those who havo boon good enough to express approval of our attitude.
