Dr Newman, of AVellington, who has returned to Wellington, after having visited Queensland, said he did mot see why any farmer in New Zealand (lie is one himself) should sell out and go to Queensland. Here there was a certainty—there a man met with great uncertainty. AVhat impressed the doctor was the very large muinber of horses reared on the small farms. “They are not nearly as good as our own horses,” lie said, “but the Queenslanders have what wo have not —markets at their door. Take Toowoomba, for instance. There are living i.n it Japanese buyers of horses for the Indian market. Tims there is an everpressing demand for horses, .and they form the main staple of revenue to most of the farmers.” Another tiling that impressed Dr Newman was that, owing to its closeness to tho market, the Queensland freezing works sent' large quantities of beef and mutton to the Philippines, Singapore, Java, and the adjacent islands. “In New Zealand,” ho continued, “wo are 1800 miles furthen away • from the markets than the Queenslanders —a very grievous handicap. The butter industry is also increasing very largely, but the butter that I tasted everywhere in Brisbane and other places was not nearly as good as our own' article, and would not fetch tlio same price in. the markets of the world.”
