A RETIRING ALLOWANCE.
CLAIAI BY COLONEL PORTER. [Special to “Times.”] WELLINGTON, -Sept. 24. Colonel Porter, C. 8., of Gisborne, ■is petitioning for a retiring allowance or compensation in view of Ins longthy services to tho Dominion, lie entered the service in a military capacity ,in June 1803, and says lie has served continuously on active military duties up to the present, and is by .rank and date of services the senior officer of the Dominion forces. He gives a lengthy list of his civil and military services in connection with his retirement from the Native Department. He quotes a letter lie received from tlie Native Minister in December, 1907, as-follows: “The Government have decided that the changes which are inevitable as the result of our new Native litigation to ask you to -retire from your present position. This step is consequent upon the fact that we are incorporating as much as possible men from the younger ranks. In- conveying this to you, I wish to express the- high appreciation of the Government for tlie long and valuable services you have rendered the country.” After his retirement, the -Solicitor-General gave an opinion that he could not qualify •for a retiring „ allowance. He, howlover, attaches a contrary opinion from Air. Skerratt, who says ho is entitled to the benefit of tlie Act of every year of continuous employment in the public service.
