HOCKEY.
POVERTY BAY ASSOCIATION. . ANNUAL DINNER AND PRESENTATION OF SHIELD. About 50 gentlemen, attended tho annual dinner of the Hockey Association last evening at Claro’s rooms. Air. E. 11. Pavitt, President of tho Association, presided. Alter justice had been done to the excellent menu provided, tho toast ot “Tho King” was loyally honored. Tho Chairman then presented tho handsome- shield, which had been won bv the West End Club, to their captain, Air. D. Roderick. In making tho - . presentation, the President said that West End were justly entitled to hold it, as they bail trained regularly and exhibited consistent form throughout tho season. 11l Air.. Roderick, West- End had a captain who was an enthusiast and lin'd infused his spirit into tho team. Air. Roderick" in accepting tlie shield, said his club were very proud to be tlio first to have the honor or having their names inscribed on tho handsome challenge dliicld. They had had some hard battles to secure it, and would do their utmost to retain it. (Applause). Later on m the evening. Air. O. R. Olsen, on behalf of the AVest End - Club, presented the shield to Air. G. J K, Pasley, President of tlie Club, j and stated that the members of tho | club considered Air. Pauley should retain possession of tho shield. As I president, ho liarl greatly assisted the • club, and tho members wished; Mr. Pasley to keep the shield in Ins j homo until AVest End lost possession . of it, I Air. Pasley thanked tho V est End j Club for tho honor of entrusting tlio shield to his keeping, and. said that - he hoped it would remain in his possession for many seasons to coino. Ho would bo loth to soon part with such a handsome wall decoration, and felt confident that at the end of next season AVest End would see to it that lie had not to yield up possession of the shield to any other club. Air. Pasley, on behalf of tho AVest End Club, took occasion during tlio evening to present Air. D. Roderick, the 'captain, with a set of brushes in case. The members of the club, the speaker l stated, were unanimous in acknowledging Air. Roderick as one of tho foremost, exponents, of tho game of hockey in the Dominion. Hie able generalship had had a great deal to do with AVest End’s victory, and the members of tlie club wished to make a slight- acknowledgment of his very successful captaincy during the season.
Mr. Roderick, who was received with cheers, modestly and briefly returned thanks.
Other toasts honored during tho evening were:—“The New Zealand Hockey Association,” proposed by Afr 0. R. Olsen, and responded to by Mr. Pavitt, who stated lie was the originator of the first hockey association (Chrischurch) in New Zealand ; . “The Referees,” proposed bv Air. Tabernacle, and responded to by Air. Pavitt ; “The Poverty Bay_Jtugby Union,” proposed bv Air. C. AI. Sargiseon, and responded to by Air. H. E. Alaucle, chairman of the Management Committee of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union; “Kindred Sports,” proposed by Air. Pasley, and responded to by Messrs R. Grant and AY. Gibson: “Tlie Visitors,” proposed by Air. AV. Lewis, and responded to by AW. Pasley; “Tlie Ladies.” -proposed by Air. Tarr, and responded to by Messrs B. J. Bright and J. AleLachlan : “The Press,” proposed by Air. Morris, and responded 1 to by the representatives present; “The Chairman,” proposed by Mr At-ande; “The Host,” proposed by the Chairman, who paid a high compliment to the excellent manner dn which the catering had been done, AW. Cjare responding. During the evening, appreciatory reference was made by several of the speakers to the services rendered the game of hockey in the district by Air. Sargisson, tho lion, secretary of tho Association, to whoso enthusiasm a great deal of the success achieved was attributed. A most enjoyable and highly successful evening was brought to a conclusion at 10 o’clock by the 6incing of “Aukl Lang Syne.” CHALLENGE MATCH. AVEST END 4 v. KIA KAHA 2, These teams met on the Domain yesterday afternoon in n challenge match. Kia Kaha, the runners-up in the championship, challenged tho winners, AA 7 est End, the losers to entertain thq winners at dinner. An excellent (game resulted, being fast and exciting, and characterised by some nice, clean hitting, end clever passing. AVest End had much tho best of the game until near tlie close of the second spell, when tho Ivia 'Kaha men asserted themselves, and on several occasions had hard luck in not increasing their scores. Tho winners were strengthened by the inclusion of Doyle and Grinlinton of tlie City Club. Crump. Roderick, Hooper, and Grinlinton wore the scorers for the winners, and Bert Bright found the net on two occasions for Kia Kaha. Air. J. J. Alartin was an efficient referee.
